The Chairman’s Corner

(The Chairman’s Corner is a timeline of content from the Chairman)

District 33 Nomination Process

Since it is summer and many of you have been on vacation, you may have missed the White House Announcement on July 1st, that Delegate Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah) who has represented the 33rd House District was nominated to become the United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia. In accepting the nomination, Delegate Gilbert has withdrawn his name from the ballot for the general election and resigned his seat, creating a vacancy.

The 33rd House District Legislative District Committee is thereby authorized to fill the vacancy and to select the nominee for the general election in November.  In the case of a vacancy, the committee representatives are given the authority to fill the vacancy. Branden Thompson, Rockingham District 1 Chair from our committee is our representative on the Legislative District Committee, but as you can easily see from the percentages of weighted vote, the Shenandoah County Representative holds a slim supermajority over Rockingham County, Page County, and Warren County combined and can select the candidate himself, should the other three representatives feel another candidate would be serve the entire district. Of course, we hope that all four  or most of the four will agree on the same candidate. Rockingham, Page, and Warren argued for a more democratic process with a quick turnaround firehouse primary or convention, but Shenandoah and the chairman (the chairman is a non-voting member in this case) argued that there was not time.

The committee met Tuesday night in Woodstock at the Sheriff’s Office at 5:30PM and decided to issue a call for a meeting this Friday to issue a call for candidates which will be due by 5PM on Tuesday, July 29 and the committee will meet on July 31 at 5PM to consider the applications of candidates according to the discussion of the committee. It is possible these dates may change slightly in the final call.  The expectation is to complete the process by the end of July to ensure completion of the necessary paperwork by mid August and have a nominee on the ballot.  To have the process completed by the end of July was the stipulation of the executive committee of the Shenandoah, which the representative from Shenandoah communicated more than once on Tuesday. This past Tuesday, the chairman did not allow for any comments from the floor to the Legislative District Committee. I would expect the same rules to continue through the upcoming meetings although they are public and visitors may attend. All of the meetings of the Legislative District Committee are anticipated to take place in Shenandoah County.

The call issued by Mr. Gentile yesterday follows below:

I, Vito F. Gentile, Chairman, HD33 LDC, hereby issue a CALL for a MEETING of the HD33 LDC on Friday, July 11, 2025 at 4:30 PM in the Conference/Training Room of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office Building, 810 North Main Street, in Woodstock, VA for the purpose of (a) to approve the CALL for a Meeting of the HD33 LDC on July 29, 2025 to fill a vacancy for the HD33 Republican Candidate in the 2025 November 2025 General Election in accordance with authority provided by Article VII, Section F in the Plan of Organization of the Republican Party of Virginia (aka, the State Party Plan) and (b) the transaction of such other business as may properly come before the HD33 LDC.Individuals with valid proxies will be seated in accordance with the Plan of Organization of the Republican Party of Virginia.

The vote of each HD33 member shall be weighted in proportion to the Republican Party Voting Strength of the respective unit in the 33rd House District.  For this purpose, the Republican Party Voting Strength will be the sum of the Republican Votes cast for the Republican Party Presidential candidate in 2024 and the Republican Party Gubernatorial candidate in 2021.  The RPV indicates the weighted vote in the HD33 LDC as follows:

Rockingham County     18.19%

Upcoming Local elections

Greetings Page County Republicans:
I wanted to provide you a short update as to our upcoming county elections as we see them today.
The Page GOP will not conduct any primaries this year. Had we conducted a primary, all petitions for the pending openings had to be delivered by 3 April, in order for the signatures to be verified prior to the start of early voting, 2 May. Only three individuals submitted their petitions by this April deadline:
– Board of Supervisor (BOS) Precinct 1, Jeremy Baldwin;
– BOS, Chairman, Clinton “Bucky” Thomas;
– BOS Precinct 4, Susan Kyle.
– BOS Precinct 2 and 3 individuals are not up for election this year.
Because Jeremy, Clinton, and Susan were unopposed, e.g. no one else submitted a petition to run against them as a Republican by the 3 April deadline, there was no need for a primary. It is noteworthy to point out that in regard to local elections, candidates running for any county elected position are not identified by party on the ballot.
As stated above, because there were no party specific (read “Republican”) challengers to the above positions, a primary will not be conducted. So, in terms of the BOS, the following are the individuals the Page GOP will be supporting:
BOS Chairman: Clinton “Bucky” Thomas (current chair – Keith Weakly will not run again).
Precinct 1: Jeremy Baldwin. The incumbent will be running as an independent.
Precinct 2: N/A as Allen Louderback’s term ends in 12/2027.
Precinct 3: N/A as Ryan Cubbage’s term ends 12/2027.
Precinct 4: Susan Kyle – because she was appointed to complete Isaac Smelter’s term, she must run for election in November.
Precinct 5: TBD – according to the Page county registrar, Jeff Vaughan, incumbent, will run again. He will however not have the support of the GOP as he failed to submit his paperwork to run as a Republican and has not joined the Page GOP – he will be running as an independent.
Any additional challengers to upcoming open positions on the BOS have until 17 Jun to submit their petitions, and if verified, to be placed on the November ballot. And because these potential challengers failed to submit their petitions as a Republican to mandate a primary, they will be considered independents.
In terms of Commonwealth Attorney, there will be no primary. The judge must issue a writ requiring an election to replace Bryan Cave before an official election process can be initiated. Chuck Butler and Chapman Good have obtained the requisite paperwork to submit petitions for candidacy. Once the judge’s actions are complete, post 16 May, Bryan departure date, we will then make a determination as to our support. There is another potential candidate for this position, Parker Gochenour. He has not made his final decision known at this point. So we could potentially have three candidates running for Commonwealth Attorney.
In terms of school board, even though the positions are unaffiliated, it is good to know we have three openings to fill on the ballot in November – the Chair, a county wide elected position; Precinct 1, for which we have no known candidates as of this date; and Precinct 5, for which we have several possible candidates. Even though the positions are unaffiliated, our GOP will identify our preferred candidates once the time is appropriate to do so.
Stand by for additional information as we get closer to the 17 Jun deadline.
Best Regards
Michael Overfelt

November 6, 2024

GREAT GOOD MORNING PAGE COUNTY

It is a great day to be a Republican! Our Prayers worked!

We have just witnessed an incredible feat by Donald J. Trump – to win a second non-consecutive term as President. President-elect Donald J. TRUMP – soon to be the 47th President of the United States of America – will make America Great Again.

The numbers are still coming in but, President-Elect Trump has more than 280 electoral votes, has won almost all battle ground states, and is on the way to winning the popular vote as well. Unfortunately, he did not win Virginia, but we had a fantastic showing in Page County.

As of now, with 95% of the votes in for Page County, President Elect Trump received 9,923 votes of the overall 12,942 votes cast, which includes early and election day voting. That is 578 more votes for Trump than we had in 2020, which was 9345. Understand this number will change slightly as we are still awaiting the results of the provisional ballots, which may take another week, and the absentee ballots, which have until Friday of this week to be received.

The provisional ballots will be finalized once the Page registrar receives a report from the Virginia election board in Richmond, which will verify the qualifications of those who voted with provisional ballots.

Ben Cline retained his seat in the Congress and remains our US Congressman. Hung Cao did not unseat Tim Kaine, so we have work to do there. I don’t have the results from our local races of town council and the city mayors as of yet, but hope to have that today.

I want to thank the citizens of Page County who turned out in this election and cast their vote for our republican candidates. It was absolutely fantastic to see so many first-time voters, young and mature alike, who realized the need to do their part to retake control of our Republic and to make our country great again.

It was also wonderful to see so many parents who brought their young children with them so they could witness the function of our democratic process and get a valuable civics lesson firsthand. I am sure what they learned and saw will live long in their memories, helping them to become better involved citizens.

I also would be remiss not to give a big shout out and heartfelt thanks to the members of our staff and committee who so graciously and selflessly volunteered their time and energy in manning the polling sites, putting up signs, knocking on doors, and helping to get out the vote. Page County should be proud of its contribution to this election and its accomplishments.

It is time to celebrate our victory, take a short break, rest, recharge and spend time with your loved ones. We have another challenge on the horizon, that of reelecting a Republican governor for Virginia, but that work begins next year, which we will discuss at our next official committee meeting in January 2025.

Thank you again. Come and join the us – Republican Party of Page County.

GOD bless Page County, our state of Virginia, the United States of America and President-elect – Donald J. Trump.

Respectively,

Michael Overfelt

Chair, Republican Committee of Page Country

PS: we will hold a gathering on 16 November to celebrate our Victory. Stay tuned for details.

October 30, 2024

Good afternoon Patriots!

First, we were called “deplorable”, then we were called “Nazis”, and now, Kamala ‘s boss considers us “garbage”.

We are none of the above. We are loyal and proud citizens of the greatest country the world has ever seen. We love our freedoms, our flag, families, and our ability to worship however we want.

We must not allow the Democrats to retain control of our country. We don’t need another worthless politician in the people’s White House, who has done nothing for our country. We all need to get out and vote, the sooner the better. Let’s bank our votes.

The Democrats are on the run. They are pulling $2 million from their North Carolina campaign and shifting it into Virginia. Why? They are giving up on their race in North Carolina and they are scared of losing Virginia.

Let’s keep the pressure on and make their fear a reality.

VOTE EARLY, VOTE NOW.

God bless Trump, our Republic, Virginia, and Page County.

By the way, put November 16 on your calendar for our free county Republican afternoon potluck celebration. We will provide the BBQ.  Stay tuned for more details to come. We will be asking folks to sign up for dishes and to RSVP soon.

Best Regards

Team Miyares Update – 8/18/2024

All,
Below is an update from our Virginia Attorney General. It is important for all of us to understand that our elected Republican leaders in Richmond are working hard to ensure we have more election security for this November and improve our lives.

Friends,

We have had a busy few weeks here on Team Miyares. In addition to traveling across the Commonwealth in support of 2024 candidates up and down the ballot, the Office of the Attorney General has been working overtime to protect Virginians.
6,303 noncitizens REMOVED from the Voter Rolls:
Virginia’s election security model is strong and designed to allow only eligible citizens to vote because your vote is your voice — the American people deserve to be heard.
It’s not a radical idea, it’s just common sense.
Walz’s statement that socialism is mere ‘neighborliness’ is a lie that disregards the harsh realities countless families have faced under socialist regimes.
My own family members were arrested and jailed in Cuba, victims of a system that masquerades oppression as community care.

Socialism crushes any form of dissent, stripping away freedoms, ultimately failing to deliver on its ‘promises’.

This is a direct threat to our American ideals.
Title IX, Women’s Sports, and Pronouns
At the Olympics, a biological male was allowed to compete against a female athlete. See the Attorney General’s statement about this heartbreaking incident.
The Fairfax court correctly declined to dismiss a challenge to FCPS’ policies on preferred pronouns. The Office of the Attorney General wrote an amicus brief supporting the student challenging the policies.
AG Miyares filed an amicus brief supporting the Hanover County School Board’s common-sense policy to separate sports teams on the basis of sex, rather than gender identity.
On August 1st, the Biden-Harris dangerous Title IX policies went into effect across the United States. Thanks to Attorney General Miyares, these will NOT GO INTO EFFECT IN VIRGINIA.
On August 2nd, AG Miyares sent ActBlue a letter, demanding answers on their potentially fraudulent practices.

Why We Need to VOTE Early

Greetings Page Republicans –

Early Voting for our Senatorial Candidate begins 3 May.

HERE is a presentation which offers some basics as to why we need to vote early

I realize many of us like to vote on election day, it is tradition. But we have to beat the Democrats at their own game, e.g., voting early, using ballot boxes, ballot harvesting and absentee ballots, all which are now legal in Virginia. It is hard to make up the votes needed after the Democrats have had over 45 days of voting if we keep repeating the same losing strategy of waiting until Election Day to vote.

Trump lost Virginia during both of the last two presidential elections. Biden won Virginia with 54.15% of the vote in 2020. Hillary Clinton carried Virginia with 49.73% in 2016. The Democrats got out and voted early as well as taking advantage of the other rules such as ballot harvesting, something I am not recommending for Page County.

We need to be aggressive and search out unregistered conservatives and get them registered and “follow up” and close the loop and get them to vote.

“Chase that ballot” can be summed up simply by saying – close the loop – follow up and make sure that person votes.

We are not in the majority, and we keep losing the elections. You have to win the election first and then change the voter laws to go back to one day voting and hand counting paper ballots.

From a practical perspective, you save campaigns money by voting early, you get taken off “the lists,” meaning you (theoretically) do not get contacted after you vote through election day with mailers and calls, plus you become available to volunteer on Election Day – and we need poll watchers!

Once we get back into the driver’s seat, we can work to change the system – hand-counted paper ballots, voter ID, and voting on Election Day, vice election season. Until we are back in the White House and have the House and Senate, we have to use the current rules. We cannot wait until election day and be 45 days behind in voting.

Remember, Early Voting for our Republican Senatorial primary starts 3 May – only days away. Let us start now with a great turnout for our Senatorial Primary in preparation for your Early Voting for our Republican Candidate which begins September 20th

Thank you,
Michael Overfelt

Below is a summary article of aproject that is ongoing to stop SCOTUS ‘packing’ by progressives through US Constitution amendment.  Although difficult to obtain, if the American people could ban alcohol via the US constitution in the past, the passing of this important amendment safeguard is infinitely ‘doable’.

The “Keep 9” Amendment to Ban Court Packing

We may be about to lose our Constitutional Republic. The pro-Court packing left’s goal is absolute power.  And they are very close to achieving their goal.

• The Supreme Court packing threat is critical. The left’s next working majority, which they win periodically, could curb the Senate filibuster, add new states, and pass a law packing the Supreme Court.

• With Court control the left could rig election rules, empower big tech to limit free speech, rule and intimidate by regulatory edict, and impose a wealth confiscation tax that most would now consider unconstitutional.

• Only a Constitutional Amendment can permanently ban Court packing.  Amendments for a Woman’s Right to Vote and Presidential Term Limits show success is possible with overwhelming public support.

• Polling shows voters would, by a 60-25% margin, support the “Keep  9” Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which says: “The Supreme Court of the United States shall be composed of nine Justices.”

• The Keep 9 Amendment was first introduced by a House Democrat (Collin Peterson, MN) and a Senate Republican (Ted Cruz, TX).  More than 200 Members of Congress now back the Amendment.

• The Amendment has been unanimously endorsed by the RNC, and by ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council), Freedom Works, Tea Party Patriots Action, Eagle Forum, Americans for Limited Government, the National Federation of Republican Women, and former Reagan Attorney General Ed Meese.  Resolutions urging Congress to act have passed in 19 state legislative chambers.  More than 800 state legislators now support the Amendment.

• The Amendment effort forces those who claim to oppose Court packing to take a stand on an Amendment to ban it.  The Amendment keeps voters’ attention focused on the Court packing threat.

• Our plan is simple.  Unite Republicans. Recruit willing Democrats. Build grassroots support. Earn media visibility.  Educate voters in races.  And hold those who won’t back the Amendment accountable.

If those who won’t support “Keep 9” lose elections, bipartisan support for it will grow.

• The threat of Court packing may be the most critical issue of our time. If we lose, our Constitutional system of checks and balances may not recover.   The left may achieve a near-permanent majority.

• We must block the left’s immediate Court packing plans, make the “Keep 9” Amendment a decisive issue in 2024, and eventually force Congress to propose and states to ratify it.

Seven Facts: Why We Should Be Very Worried by the Supreme Court Packing Threat

1. More than 60 Democrats in Congress have backed legislation to expand the size of the Supreme Court.

2. Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries all say that all Supreme Court reform options are “on the table.”

3. The 2 largest pro-abortion rights groups in America, Planned Parenthood and NAARL/Pro-Choice America as well as the nation’s largest teachers union, the National Education Association, and the United Auto Workers Union have come out for Supreme Court expansion.

4. President Biden, who says he opposes Court packing, for years said he supported the Senate filibuster.  But then in 2022 he called the filibuster a “relic of the Jim Crow era.”

5. President Biden’s handpicked 2021 Supreme Court Commission debated many Supreme Court reforms but would not discuss the “Keep Nine”Amendment that would permanently prohibit manipulation of the Court’s size by either party, even though “Keep Nine” had more support in Congress than any other specific reform, and the Commission, early in its history, received many more requests to consider “Keep Nine” than for any other reform.

6. Not a single Democrat in the current or past Congress has so far supported the “Keep 9”Amendment, even though it was first introduced in Congress by a Democrat, it has been backed by 200 Members of Congress and a bipartisan group of more than 800 state leaders, and polling  shows that more Democratic voters would support than oppose the Amendment.

7.  49 Senate Democrats have already voted or pledged to create a “voting rights” exception to the Senate filibuster.  Democrats need to win only one more vote in the Senate plus control of the House and White House to have the votes to create a voting rights exception to the Senate filibuster, then add DC as a new state, and then use their expanded Senate majority to expand the size of the Supreme Court.

Bonus Fact: The Biden campaign just hired the Brian Fallon, the leader of the pro-Court packing group, “Demand Justice”, as Vice President Harris’ campaign spokesperson.

The Court Packing Threat: How It Can Be Exposed To Help Republicans Win in 2024

  1. Democrats are almost certain to pack the Supreme Court the next time they win control of Congress and the White House.
  2. Right now Democrats are 1 vote away in the Senate and 4 votes in the House from being able to weaken the Senate filibuster, add DC as a new state, and then pack the Court.
  3. Whether or not Americans  preserve our independent Supreme Court may be the  most fundamental issue decided in the 2024 election.
  4. The “Keep 9” Constitutional Amendment already backed by the RNC, the NFRW, Tea Part Patriots and 200 Members of Congress, would end the Court packing threat. It simply states “The Supreme Court of the United States shall be composed of nine Justices.”
  5. In 2024 we must do 3 things.
  6. Unite Republicans to Support Keep 9     Make Keep 9 widely known to voters. Expose Democrats who won’t back Keep 9.

Every Democrat who claims to oppose Court packing today but won’t back an Amendment to ban it tomorrow must be exposed as a closet enabler of Court packing. If someone lurking outside your home at 4 am says: “I am not a burglar but I don’t want to outlaw burglary” what are his true intentions?

There are at least 22 key toss up races for Congress and 8 swing states where we must make the Court packing threat and the “Keep 9” Amendment to end it better known to voters and a key issue in November!

Here are specific things you can do to help.

Call your elected officials and the offices of candidates you can vote for and ask where they stand on the Keep 9 Amendment.

Become a leaders for our Media Outreach Team to help spread the Keep 9 message by:

Posting on Social Media and online.

Writing Letters to the Editor.

Calling Radio Talk Shows

Help to organize campus and community debate in your area between advocates of Court expansion and advocates of the Keep Nine Amendment to ensure it never happens.

Become a Keep 9 “Ambassador” who will attend meetings and spread the word in conversations and questions, and/or a Keep 9 Speaker who will speak to groups in your area and encourage them to pass Resolutions endorsing Keep 9.

Finally, we need help connecting us to donorswho will help us deliver our message to swing voters in key states and districts that will decide the 2024 election.

The Bottom line:

Get ready to live in an America that no longer has an independent Supreme Court to protect our rights.

Or do something to expose and end the threat!

Letter from the GOP Chair…

November 9, 2023

Good Day Page County Republicans,

On Tuesday, Page County turned out a potential record number of voters for an off-year election. We had greater than 53% of our 17,244 voter base cast their ballots, or approximately 9200 persons when one combines, early voting, absentee votes, provisional votes and those who chose to vote on election day.

Congratulations to the six candidates who won their races. As of 9 Nov, the unofficial results are as follows:

Chad Cubbage, reelected as Sheriff with 4,592 votes.

Bryan Cave, reelected as Commonwealth Attorney with an impressive 7,587 votes.

Rebecca Smith, reelected as Commissioner of Revenue with 5,526, over 2,500 more votes than her opponent.

Allen Louderback, reelected as Member Board of Supervisors (District 2) with 948 votes.

Issac B. Smelser, elected as Member of Board of Supervisors (District 4) with 1,349 votes.

Michael Overfelt, elected as Member School Board, (District 2) with 1,450 votes.

Our best to Shirron who, while she did not win, put up a valiant and commendable fight in the face of significant personal tragedy. We all wish her well and are saddened by the loss of her husband, who passed away just two days before election day. She remains a highly valued member of the team and 2nd Vice Chair of the Page GOP.

We also saw a significant vote of confidence for Mark D. Obenshain, Member, Senate of Virginia (2nd District) with 6,883 votes and C. Todd Gilbert, Member, House of Delegates (33rd District) with 7,061 votes. Congratulations to them both and well done to Page County republicans for their support.

Although we had a poor outcome across the state, losing the House of Delegates and failing to take back the Senate of Virginia, Page County had a commendable showing. We greatly appreciate all the hard work that was done to support this election and to achieve the above successes.

Now it is time to begin to think and plan for the upcoming Presidential, US congressional and senatorial races in 2024. It is less than a year away and we have much to do to prepare. We will need all hands on deck, working together as a team to ensure we take back our country.

As a side note – the election will be certified on Monday, 13 Nov. As of this writing, 9 Nov, there are numerous outstanding absentee ballots yet to be counted. There are also several provisional votes (approximately 45) which still need to be tallied. Bottom line, with only a 14-vote margin or .2% in the Page County Clerk of Court race between the current leader (receiving 27.9 %) and the second place (receiving 27.7 %), a decisive winner has yet to be determined.

Thank you again for all your efforts. Now it is time to come together and look to the future of our nation.
